Welcome! Now goodbye.

Barack Obama’s freshly appointed “Muslim-outreach coordinator” Mazen Asbahi barely got his arm of outreach extended before abruptly resigning on Monday. This came after the Global Muslim Brotherhood Daily Report exposed links from his past to Islamic radicals. Apparently he forgot to include that on his resume.

According to WSJ:

In 2000, Mr. Asbahi briefly served on the board of Allied Assets Advisors Fund, a Delaware-registered trust. Its other board members at the time included Jamal Said, the imam at a fundamentalist-controlled mosque in Illinois.

The eight-year-old connection between Mr. Asbahi and Mr. Said was raised last week by the Global Muslim Brotherhood Daily Report, which is published by a Washington think tank and chronicles the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood, a world-wide fundamentalist group based in Egypt. Other Web sites, some pro-Republican and others critical of fundamentalist Islam, also have reported on the background of Mr. Asbahi. He is a frequent speaker before several groups in the U.S. that scholars have associated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Supporters of Sen. Baranoid will expect me to mention his “funny middle name” here. Sorry to disappoint… I’m more troubled about the Rev. Wright influence than the Muslim influence as far as Barry is concerned.

What I’d rather do here is pose the following question: Is there really such a creature as a moderate Muslim from within the ranks of Islamic leaders and opinion makers?

Sure there are Muslims in the world of the everyday working variety who are good, kind-hearted generous people. Those are the ones who often get dragged from their homes and families at midnight and dismembered by the likes of the Taliban for some frivolous offense against Islam.

But I’m speaking of those who purport to speak for Islam and those in positions of influence. Is there a leader in the bunch who doesn’t secretly harbor anti-American or anti-Western sentiments or have ties to those who do? Because I’m thinking Obama’s chances of being able to aquire a replacement for Asbahi who doesn’t have a similar… or worse… record are about as good as Al Gore’s chances of acquiring a personality.

Prove me wrong… I would love nothing more. And while you’re at it, explain to me just why a candidate NEEDS a Muslim outreach coordinator in the first place. Personally, I’m still waiting for Muslims to reach out to US. There are still a few issues I’d like to get resolved…
