Rangel wants to investigate…. Rangel

Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel is throwing himself into the pussycat’s den as he calls for a congressional investigation into his own ethical violations. This will be about as effective as putting yourself on trial with your own mother serving as judge, jury and prosecutor.

(The Politico) Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, called on the House ethics committee to investigate his role in raising funds for the “Rangel Center” at City College in New York.

In a combative press conference this morning, Rangel went after the Washington Post for reporting that he was sending out letters on official congressional letterhead soliciting funds for the center from corporations and wealthy individuals with business before his panel.

How dare they report that!

“The review should be done as soon as possible so as to clear up any misunderstandings regarding my efforts to convene meeting to discuss partnerships between educational institutions and the private sector,” Rangel said in a statement released at the press conference.

I believe the review will show there have been no violations of the [House ethics] rules.”

With “Tubbs” and Co. presiding over the process this may well be a very true statement. In fact, I gather it will go much like the Democrat-controlled House Whitewater hearings in the mid-90’s which were lorded over by Rep. Henry Gonzalez.

Here’s a sampling of what we may behold:

Congressman: “My dear, dear lady… forgive me for asking this but… during your employment with Rep. Rangel did you ever see or hear anything that you would interpret in any way to be unlawful or unethical?”

Witness: “No.”

Congressman: “Thank you. [looking around incredulously] What the hell are we doing here?”

So grab some popcorn put it on C-Span as this promises to be some great daytime television.  And you thought Dr. Phil was annoying…
